Chugach Children's Forest Celebrates September 25, 2009
A gathering of youth and community partners celebrated the kick-off of the Chugach Children's Forest on September 25, recognizing the success of the first year's pilot programs. Developed in partnership with the Chugach National Forest, Alaska Geographic, and a long list of community partners, the program provides the next generation unique opportunities to experience the their wild Alaska backyard through stewardship and leadership.
The event showcased a gallery of youth-produced media, products of students working around the Chugach National Forest from Cordova to Anchorage, and Prince William Sound to the Kenai Peninsula. The media will be shared with other students and the public through a variety of outlets, including a virtual visitor center under development for the Chugach National Forest. Youth participating in the past year's programs were also recognized for their leadership in research expeditions, establishing a Youth Managed Section of the Chugach National Forest, and connecting youth and their communities to their public lands.
Well over 200 people attended the event that also acknowledged the commitment and dedication of a long list of partners who coordinate this unique and expanding program. The ceremony included remarks from honored guests Chugach National Forest Supervisor Joe Meade, Alaska Geographic Executive Director Charles Money, Special Assistant to the USDA Undersecretary of Natural Resources and the Environment Meryl Harrell, and Alaska U.S. Senator Mark Begich.
