Kenai Fjords National Park

Crowned by an icefield and carved by glaciers, Kenai Fjords is continually reshaped by ice and sea. Here, birds swim better than fly, mythical ice worms really exist, and mammals are better adapted to life in the water than on land.

Tips for Visitors

exit-glacierjpgKenai Fjords Information Center in Seward’s small boat harbor is a great place to start your park visit and its open daily during the summer season.

Exit Glacier is the only part of the park accessible by road and is one of the most visited glaciers in Alaska—hike the trails, get close to a glacier, or talk with a ranger at the nature center.

Boat Tours leave Seward’s harbor daily in summer, but book ahead—both the half-day and full day excursions are popular.

Natural Highlights

• The Fjord ecosystem of Resurrection Bay offers excellent viewing of the park’s many tidewater and piedmont Glaciers. Witness the thundering sound of calving glaciers as the land here continues to move and reshape itself.

Wildlife viewing is spectacular and the diversity if life includes puffins, oystercatchers, otters, sea lions, porpoises, orcas, and humpback whales.

Historical Highlight

At 700 square miles, the Harding Icefield is the largest icefield located entirely within the United States and is one of the main reasons the park was established.

Cultural Highlight

Alutiiq people have lived in this area for more than one thousand years, subsisting off the fruits of the sea and living by a common Alaska Native saying, “When the tide is out, the table is set.”
